How To Listen To Music Without Damaging Your Hearing

Loud sounds are dangerous to your ears; they can easily cause temporary or permanent hearing impairment. This means those who are constantly listening to music risk damaging their hearing. If you love music; these tips will help you preserve your hearing:

Switch to Earphones

Many people listen to music on their portable players; portable players are convenient because you can carry them everywhere, they carry thousands of phones, and you can use ear buds or earphones so you don't inconvenience other people. Unfortunately, listening to music this way puts the sound very close to your eardrums, which increases the risk of hearing damage. Mitigate the risk by switching to earphones instead of ear buds. Earphones are better because they block outside sounds, which means you don't have to turn up the music to dangerous levels so that it can compete favorably with outside noises.

Listen At Low Volume

Listening to music at high volume is dangerous because the air vibrations may damage the nerve fibers that channel signals from your ears to your brains. The same vibrations may also damage the tiny hair cells that pick up sound signals by vibrating in response to sound. Therefore, reduce your music's volume to a reasonable level or sit some distance away from the speakers if you aren't using earphones. For example, when attending music concerts or patronizing nightclubs, find quiet spots within the venues where you can enjoy the music without being too near the speakers.  

Take Regular Breaks

It's not just the volume of the music that matter; even the duration also determines the danger posed by your music. The longer you expose your hearing to loud music the more dangerous it is. Therefore, take regular breaks to reduce the risk; ideally, you shouldn't use earphones for more than an hour at a time.

Don't Sleep With the Music On

You are also risking your hearing if you use music to lull yourself to sleep or like listening to music before going to sleep and frequency forget to turn it off. This is because your ears will still be feeling the sound vibrations even while you are sleep. You can easily expose your ears to several hours of potentially damaging sounds that way. Avoid such scenarios by setting your music player to turn off at a predetermined time, putting a short playlist that can't play for hours or just turn off the player whenever you feel sleepy.
